Remember the Importance of High Quality Food and Water Power for Your Body

Proper hydration improves mood, sleep quality and overall health

Whether you're studying for an exam, working on the computer or exercising, you shouldn't forget to drink regularly. Inadequate water intake can reduce performance, concentration and memory by up to 20%. Proper hydration, on the other hand, improves mood, sleep quality and overall health. Water helps transport nutrients and minerals to cells

All cells in the body depend on water to perform their basic functions. Optimal water intake helps prevent diseases of certain organs (e.g. brain, kidneys, lungs, but also heart). The brain in particular is made up of at least 75% water and needs adequate hydration for the formation of new neurons and for the overall health of brain cells, including their production, function and longevity.

Regularly replenishing fluids will reduce the fatigue, headache or loss of concentration you may experience as a result of dehydration (we're talking mild dehydration when you've lost just 2% of your body's water). As proof we can for example use a Chinese study from 2019. Medical students at Tsangzhou Medical University didn't drink any fluids for 36 hours. As a result, they were unable to maintain attention, felt less vital and had poorer memory as well as a lower sense of self-esteem. After increasing their water intake, their short-term memory improved, their reactions were quicker, they concentrated better and were immediately in a better mood.

Water is absolutely essential for all body functions, such as:

  • the transport of key minerals and nutrients to cells
  • maintaining thermoregulation (sweating)
  • the transport of metabolic waste products and respiratory gasses
  • flushing out toxins from the body
  • all chemical reactions that occur naturally in the human body
  • proper joint function
  • the protection and health of the brain and hear
  • skin elasticity and health

Fluid requirements depend on age, gender and health status

The fluid requirement varies from person to person and depends on various factors - age and gender, energy metabolism, ambient temperature or health status (people with kidney disease, for example, are allowed to drink significantly less fluid per day).

According to The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), healthy adult males should drink 2.5 litres of water per day, healthy adult females about 2 litres of water per day. However, fluid requirements are a strictly individual matter. You should drink more fluids especially when you are sick (vomiting, diarrhea) and when you are very physically active. This also applies to pregnant and breastfeeding women.

For older people, drinking is even more important as they tend to be less sensitive to thirst and may have lower water reserves due to reduced muscle mass and medication.

Daily fluid intake mainly consists of fluids from beverages. These make up about 70% of your daily intake. The best source of fluid for the body is pure water. Sweetened drinks, coffee and black or green tea do not have a hydrating effect. About 20% of fluids are also contained in food. However, foods other than certain fruits and vegetables that contain a lot of water—such as watermelon, cucumbers or tomatoes—should generally not be counted as sources of water. Another small part of the water in the body is also produced during the metabolism of nutrients (so-called oxidative water).

On the other hand, excessive fluid intake can also cause harm. So if you don't want to put unnecessary strain on your kidneys, drink reasonable amounts of water and always take your health into account.

Some tips for upping your water game:

  • always carry a water bottle with you that you can refill during the day
  • when you go to a restaurant, order water instead of a sweetened or alcoholic beverage
  • drink an unsweetened decaffeinated tea or very diluted juice
  • add a few pieces of fruit or mint to the water to give it some flavour
  • adding a few ice cubes makes for a great refreshment
